                             A RESOLUTION 
 
  1- 1  Recognizing the Centennial Anniversary of Professional 
  1- 2  Social Work; and for other purposes. 
 
  1- 3  WHEREAS, the importance of caring for those less fortunate 
  1- 4  can be found throughout history in cultures around the 
  1- 5  world, including the Greek city-states and the writings of 
  1- 6  Confucius and Jesus Christ; and 
 
  1- 7  WHEREAS, caring for the poor played an important role in the 
  1- 8  early years of the Republic of the United States of America, 
  1- 9  with the establishment of such things as the first publicly 
  1-10  funded orphanage in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1790; the 
  1-11  Freedmen's Bureau to provide temporary relief, education, 
  1-12  employment, and health care for newly released slaves in 
  1-13  1865; and the founding of the Children's Aid Society to aid 
  1-14  New York's street children in 1853; and 
 
  1-15  WHEREAS, the first school for social workers was established 
  1-16  in 1898 as the New York School of Philanthropy; and 
 
  1-17  WHEREAS, the School of Social Work was established at the 
  1-18  University of Georgia in 1964 to prepare students to provide 
  1-19  services across the lifespan of those in need; and 
 
  1-20  WHEREAS, the School of Social Work has also prepared 
  1-21  students to play a primary role in revitalizing 
  1-22  organizations and communities; and 
 
  1-23  WHEREAS, the University of Georgia School of Social Work 
  1-24  served as the state's only accredited master's of social 
  1-25  work program until 1997; and 
 
  1-26  WHEREAS, the University of Georgia School of Social Work has 
  1-27  graduated more than 3,000 bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. 
  1-28  students during its 34 years; and 
 
  1-29  WHEREAS, these graduates have served in social work 
  1-30  positions throughout the State of Georgia and the nation. 
 
  1-31  NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF 
  1-32  REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize May 
  1-33  7, 1998, as "Centennial Anniversary for Social Work Day," 
  1-34  and pledge commitment to policies and programs which will 
  1-35  support the social work profession and those it serves.

  2- 1  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of 
  2- 2  Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an 
  2- 3  appropriate copy of this resolution to the University of
