                             A RESOLUTION 
  1- 1  Commending Gwendolyn Lenna Torrence; and for other purposes. 
  1- 2  WHEREAS, Gwendolyn Lenna Torrence, of DeKalb County, 
  1- 3  Georgia, is an Olympic gold medalist, NCAA champion, and 
  1- 4  state champion athlete; and 
  1- 5  WHEREAS, she was born June 12, 1965, and attended Columbia 
  1- 6  High School and the University of Georgia; and 
  1- 7  WHEREAS, she was the state champion in the 100 meter and 200 
  1- 8  meter dashes and the 400 meter and 1600 meter relays; and 
  1- 9  WHEREAS, at the University of Georgia she became a two-time 
  1-10  indoor NCAA champion in the 100 and 200 meter dashes; and 
  1-11  WHEREAS, she earned a place on her first international team 
  1-12  at the World University Games in 1986, when she anchored the 
  1-13  gold medal team in the 400 meter relay; and 
  1-14  WHEREAS, she returned to the World University Games in 1987, 
  1-15  and took home the gold in the 100 meter and 200 meter dashes 
  1-16  and the 400 meter relay; and 
  1-17  WHEREAS, just three years before the 1992 Olympic trials, 
  1-18  she gave birth to her son, Manley Mekhail Waller III, and 
  1-19  was able, with the support of her husband and her entire 
  1-20  family, to achieve the near impossible by gaining the 
  1-21  remarkable mental and physical strength needed for national 
  1-22  and international competition; and 
  1-23  WHEREAS, in the 1992 Olympics, she won a gold medal in the 
  1-24  200 meter dash and anchored the gold medal 400 meter relay 
  1-25  team; and 
  1-26  WHEREAS, in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, her outstanding 
  1-27  performance brought home the gold medal in the 400 meter 
  1-28  relay and the bronze medal in the 100 meter dash. 
  1-30  REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend 
  1-31  Gwendolyn Lenna Torrence for her outstanding athletic 
  1-32  achievements, her competitive spirit, and the dedication and 
  1-33  hard work which have enabled her to excel at track and field 
  1-34  and motherhood simultaneously. 
  2- 1  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of 
  2- 2  Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an 
  2- 3  appropriate copy of this resolution to Gwendolyn Lenna 
  2- 4  Torrence.
