                             A RESOLUTION 
  1- 1  Commending the Hughes Spalding Children's Hospital; and for 
  1- 2  other purposes. 
  1- 3  WHEREAS, reading is fundamental for a child's ability to 
  1- 4  succeed in school and thereafter; and 
  1- 5  WHEREAS, a child who can read has an open door to the world 
  1- 6  through books about science, history, the world's cultures, 
  1- 7  geography, biographies and autobiographies of the world's 
  1- 8  great leaders, and a myriad of other significant subjects; 
  1- 9  and 
  1-10  WHEREAS, brain research that has taken place throughout the 
  1-11  United States has revealed that newborn babies greatly 
  1-12  benefit from stimulating experiences such as hearing the 
  1-13  reading of books and nursery rhymes, the singing of 
  1-14  lullabies, and the playing of classical music; and 
  1-15  WHEREAS, the Ready, Set, Read program that has been 
  1-16  established by the Hughes Spalding Children's Hospital is an 
  1-17  exciting, progressive program to alert parents to the 
  1-18  paramount need to provide newborns and young children with 
  1-19  stimulating and enriching experiences, such as the reading 
  1-20  of books; and 
  1-21  WHEREAS, the Ready, Set, Read program of the Hughes Spalding 
  1-22  Children's Hospital can make a significant contribution to 
  1-23  the well-being of Georgia's children by contributing to 
  1-24  school readiness and by enhancing the opportunity for 
  1-25  academic success. 
  1-27  REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize and 
  1-28  commend the Hughes Spalding Children's Hospital for its 
  1-29  innovative and effective Ready, Set, Read program which will 
  1-30  provide enduring benefits to the children of Georgia and to 
  1-31  our state as a whole. 
  1-32  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of 
  1-33  Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an 
  1-34  appropriate copy of this resolution to the Hughes Spalding 
  1-35  Children's Hospital.
