                        A BILL TO BE ENTITLED 
                               AN ACT 
 
 
  1- 1  To amend Chapter 10 of Title 40 of the Official Code of 
  1- 2  Georgia Annotated, known as the "Highway Safety Coordination 
  1- 3  Act of 1967," so as to provide that under certain conditions 
  1- 4  individuals who were either certified or registered as peace 
  1- 5  officers under Chapter 8 of Title 35, the "Georgia Peace 
  1- 6  Officer Standards and Training Act," may continue their 
  1- 7  status as peace officers while employed by the Office of 
  1- 8  Highway Safety in the Department of Public Safety with all 
  1- 9  benefits associated thereto; to provide an effective date; 
  1-10  to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes. 
 
  1-11       BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA: 
 
  1-12                           SECTION 1. 
 
  1-13  Chapter 10 of Title 40 of the Official Code of Georgia 
  1-14  Annotated, known as the "Highway Safety Coordination Act of 
  1-15  1967," is amended by striking Code Section 40-10-6, relating 
  1-16  to office space and staff of the Office of Highway Safety in 
  1-17  the Department of Public Safety, and inserting in lieu 
  1-18  thereof a new Code Section 40-10-6 to read as follows: 
 
  1-19    "40-10-6. 
 
  1-20    (a) The Governor is authorized to provide and designate 
  1-21    for the use of the director such space as shall be 
  1-22    necessary to quarter the director and his the director's 
  1-23    staff. The director is authorized to employ and secure the 
  1-24    necessary staff, supplies, and materials to carry out this 
  1-25    chapter, subject to the approval of the Governor. 
 
  1-26    (b) Any person employed by the Office of Highway Safety 
  1-27    who, at some time prior ot his or her employment with the 
  1-28    Office of Highway Safety, was registered or certified as a 
  1-29    peace officer under Chapter 8 of Title 35, the 'Georgia 
  1-30    Peace Officer Standards and Training Act,' may remain 
  1-31    registered or certified as a peace officer with all rights 
  1-32    and benefits associated thereto so long as the employee is 
  1-33    in compliance with continuing education requirements as 
  1-34    provided for peace officers in Chapter 8 of Title 35, is

  2- 1    otherwise eligible for certification or registration as 
  2- 2    provided in said Chapter 8 of Title 35, and his or her 
  2- 3    certification has not been suspended, revoked, or 
  2- 4    sanctioned by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and 
  2- 5    Training Council." 
 
  2- 6                           SECTION 2. 
 
  2- 7  This Act shall become effective upon its approval by the 
  2- 8  Governor or upon its becoming law without such approval. 
 
  2- 9                           SECTION 3. 
 
  2-10  All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are
