David Ralston of Blue Ridge was elected to the state Senate from the 51st District in 1992 and is now serving his third term.
A Republican, Ralston is secretary of the Senate Judiciary Committee and is a member of the influential Appropriations Committee. He also serves on the Education and prestigious Rules Committees.
Senator Ralston has been named to a leadership position in the Senate Republican Caucus with his election as Caucus vice-chairman for the 1997-98 term.
Senator Ralston is a member of the Georgia Agricultural Exposition Overview Committee and represents Georgia as an alternate member of the Justice, Public Safety and Consumer Affairs Committee of the Southern Legislative Conference (SLC).
Ralston is a member of the Governor's Privatization Commission and served as chairman of the Senate Study Committee on Privatization of Governmental Services in 1995. He has also served as a member of the Senate Water Quality and Water Supply Alternative Financing Study Committee and the Senate Study Committee on Civil Justice Reform.
In 1994, Ralston was selected from lawmakers across the country to participate in the prestigious Emerging Political Leaders Program at the University of Virginia. The bi-partisan program is designed to expand and develop the leadership potential of promising state legislators.
Born March 14, 1954 in Ellijay, Ralston graduated from North Georgia College and earned his law degree from the University of Georgia. He is currently a practicing attorney.
Active in community and professional affairs, Ralston is past- president of the Appalachian Judicial Circuit Bar Association and a member of the Board of Governors of the State Bar of Georgia.
He is a past president of the Blue Ridge Mountain Arts Association and serves as a director of Vocational Transitions, Inc., and as a member of the Advisory Board of Gilmer County Vocational Education. He is a member of the Fannin County Chamber of Commerce.
Ralston and his wife, Jane, are the parents of two children -- Elizabeth and Matt. They are Baptists.
The 51st District, which Ralston represents, includes: Fannin, Gilmer, Pickens and Gordon Counties and portions of Cherokee County.
