Sam Roberts of Douglasville was first elected to the Georgia State Senate in 1996 for the 1997-98 legislative term.
Senator Roberts is a member of the Banking & Financial Institutions, Economic Development, Tourism & Cultural Affairs, Insurance & Labor, and Public Safety Committees.
Roberts has been a member of the Douglas County Development Authority since 1995. He was vice-president for legislative affairs for the Georgia Insurance Agents Association from 1994-96.
Born April 20, 1937 in Rome, Roberts graduated from Carrollton High School and earned a BBA degree in insurance from Georgia State University. He is owner and president of the Roberts Insurance Agency.
Active in community affairs, Roberts is a past president of the Rotary Club, Sertoma Club, Douglas County Tiger Club and the Greater Atlanta Pop Warner Football organization. He is a national director of the U.S. Jaycees and past director of the Douglas County Chamber of Commerce, the March of Dimes and the American Cancer Society. Roberts is also a Mason and a Shriner.
Roberts has received a number of awards for his community service, including induction in the Carrollton Trojan Hall of Fame in 1976 and membership in Who's Who in Georgia for 1993. He was also recognized as Small Businessperson of the Year for 1995, and as the Douglas County Home Builders Association's Build a Better Georgia winner the same year.
Youth sports has been a top priority of Roberts over the past two decades. He was a Pop Warner football coach for 20 years, with a record of 226-44-6, and has been the PA voice of the Douglas County Tigers since the mid '70s. Roberts is also the youth basketball coach at Pray's Mill Baptist Church.
Roberts and his wife, Sue, are the parents of three children: Sherrie, Amber and Beau. They are members of the Heritage Baptist Church in Douglasville.
The 30th Senate District, which Roberts, represents includes Carroll County and portions of Douglas County.
