Biographical Information

Diana Harvey Johnson was first elected to the Senate from the Savannah area in 1994 and is now serving her second term.

A Democrat, Johnson is a member of the influential Senate Appropriations Committee and the Special Judiciary Committee. She also serves on the Health and Human Services Committee and the Defense and Veterans Affairs panel.

In addition to her standing committee assignments, Senator Johnson chairs the Legislative Black Caucus and was the founding chairman of the Caucus' Committee on Economic Development. She co-chaired the joint Senate-House Task force on Community Economic Development.

A veteran legislator, Johnson served five terms in the Georgia House of Representatives before her election to the Senate. When first elected in 1982, she became the first woman in history to represent Chatham County in the Georgia General Assembly.

Senator Johnson has been instrumental in the passage of a number of pieces of major legislation including a new law which does away with common law marriages and legislation calling for the state's first study of infant mortality. She also led the first comprehensive statewide study of Georgia Aquaculture.

During her service in the Senate and House, Johnson's legislative focus has been on economic development and job creation/training, education, and care for the aged and sick.

Active in political and community affairs, Senator Johnson was a delegate to the International Women's Year Conference. She participated in the White House Conference on Small Business and was a delegate to the White House Conference on Tourism. She is a member of the Georgia Historical Society and the Savannah Chamber of Commerce.

The Savannah lawmaker has received a number of awards for her legislative and community services including the: Georgia Association of Educators' Human Relations Award; the Georgia Pediatric Association's Friend of Children Award; and the Savannah Business League's Community Service Award.

She has also received the Mamie K. Taylor Award from the BPW-GA; the Citizenship Award from the Savannah Prince Hall Masons; and the Outstanding Humanitarian Award from the International Longshoremen's Union.

A native of Macon, Johnson earned a BA in Social Science and Education from Atlanta's Morris Brown College and a master's degree in History from the University of Georgia.

She is the owner of CAA Consulting Corporation, a marketing and public relations consulting firm. In addition, she is the author of several books: Welcome to Good Eating in Georgia: a Cookbook; Diane Harvey Johnson's Little Blue Book of Chatham County; and The Development of Indigo in Colonial South Carolina.

The 2nd District, which Senator Johnson represents, includes portions of Chatham County and the City of Savannah.
