HR 501 LC 21 3406 A RESOLUTION 1- 1 Designating the John R. McKinney Medal of Honor Highway; and 1- 2 for other purposes. 1- 3 WHEREAS, on May 11, 1945, during the retaking of the 1- 4 Philippine Islands, Sergeant John R. McKinney was part of a 1- 5 three-man crew manning a light machine gun when the Japanese 1- 6 attacked the company perimeter, concentrating on the machine 1- 7 gun position; and 1- 8 WHEREAS, struck with a glancing blow to the head by an 1- 9 enemy's saber, he bludgeoned his attacker and shot another, 1-10 and when the other members of the gun crew withdrew, 1-11 Sergeant McKinney alone defended the position, which was by 1-12 then overrun by ten enemy soldiers, and he shot seven and 1-13 bludgeoned three with his rifle, thus preventing the machine 1-14 gun from being used on his own company; and 1-15 WHEREAS, as the machine gun was rendered inoperative during 1-16 the fighting, he was left to defend the position with only 1-17 his assault rifle as Japanese soldiers attacked with hand 1-18 grenades and mortars, and by the time assistance arrived, 1-19 Sergeant McKinney was in command of the area with 38 enemy 1-20 dead around the machine gun position and two more 40 meters 1-21 away beside a mortar, all shot or clubbed to death by 1-22 Sergeant McKinney; and 1-23 WHEREAS, for his bravery, which saved the lives of many of 1-24 his company, Sergeant McKinney was awarded the nation's 1-25 highest award for bravery, the Medal of Honor; and 1-26 WHEREAS, John R. McKinney, a native Georgian, now lives in 1-27 Sylvania, Screven County, Georgia. 1-28 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF 1-29 GEORGIA that the section of State Route 21 in Screven County 1-30 from Jenkins County east to Effingham County shall be 1-31 designated as the John R. McKinney Medal of Honor Highway. 1-32 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation 1-33 is authorized and directed to place and maintain appropriate 1-34 signs at appropriate locations designating said route as 1-35 provided in this resolution. -1- (Index) LC 21 3406 2- 1 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of 2- 2 Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an 2- 3 appropriate copy of this resolution to John R.
